Bio

Amin Naeni is a research fellow at the Center for Middle East and Global Order (CMEG). He completed his M.A. in Middle East and North Africa Studies at the University of Tehran in 2018. Amin’s thesis addressed the emergence of
a new chapter in Tehran-Moscow ties with the beginning of security-military cooperation in the Syrian civil war. Naeni worked on two funded projects at the University of Tehran’s Center for Central Eurasia Studies, focusing on developments in Iran-Russia relations and the impact of Russia-US rivalry in the Middle East on Iran’s regional interests. In 2019 and 2020, he was also involved in a project organized by the leading German institute, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), which “selected a distinguished group of progressive young professionals working on security issues”. Since 2020, he has published several short articles in some of the world’s leading think tanks, such as the Brookings Institution, the Middle East Institute (MEI), and the Atlantic Council, discussing both the domestic and foreign policy of Iran. In 2022, Naeni moved to Australia to start his Ph.D. at Alfred Deakin Institute, Deakin University, where he is working on the rise of digital technologies in Iran, focusing on the footprint of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on developments in Iran's society. His work also includes investigating the cooperation between the Islamic Republic with Russia and China to expand internet censorship in Iran.
Additionally, he is a research assistant at Deakin University, expanding his research projects beyond his Ph.D. thesis.
